New Board Member - Steve Maynard

8 Sep 2020

At the Annual General Meeting of the Billiards & Snooker Association of WA held at the Belmont Sports & Recreation Club on 8 September, Steve Maynard was elected to the Board for a 1 year term. Steve is a well respected member of the Billiards & Snooker community and brings a wealth of experience in the sport as well as the motor vehicle industry - we welcome Steve and look forward to working together for the good of the sport.

Also renewing their two year terms were Janine Rollings and Simon Rae, who will continue in their roles as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

Following is the text of the report from BSAWA President Adam Wyard, delivered at the AGM:

So here we are after one of the more unusual years in my Snooker experience. We have been fortunate in WA that we have been able to return to almost normal life after only a three month hiatus, but at the national level the sport is on hold until further notice, meaning 2020 is essentially written off.

For the BSAWA Board, we have had one change since last year's AGM – we welcomed Samantha Rae to the Board who has taken on the role of Social Media and Promotions. Sam has been behind the video interviews you will have seen on Facebook, and it has been great to have her reliable production of the Cueball newsletters emailed on a regular basis. Welcome Sam to the team and thank you for your input.

I must also give thanks to the rest of the Board for their work in keeping the wheels in motion for the Association. Ben Keen as Vice President and Tournament Director, in addition to heading up our Junior Coaching program has been an absolute rock – I can honestly say that without him the BSAWA would be lost. Janine Rollings as Secretary and Simon Rae as Treasurer give us the dependability we need to meet the requirements of running a State Sporting Organisation – there is a lot more to it than just turning up on the day and hitting balls around a table.

Our National results were a little thin this year given the shutdown from March. The Australian Junior Championships were held in Albury in January where Cylas Jackson was hard done by to say the least and just missed out on making the Semi Finals of the Under 12 Snooker. Daniel King missed qualifying by a single frame for the Quarter Finals of the Under 18 Snooker, but did manage to reach the Semi Finals of the Under 18 Billiards.

Last year we made a commitment to expand our footprint into Regional WA, and last month we followed through on this by holding our first ever Ranking Tournament in Bunbury. The rescheduled timing unfortunately meant that a few of the leading local players were unavailable to compete, but the event was well received and will surely build in years to come.

Our State Championship was forced to move from its traditional date of the WA Day long weekend, and will now be held at the end of this month. Since the re-start of events we have seen good participation in tournaments, so I expect we will see close to a full field for this year's State Title.

Thank you for your support of the Association with your attendance tonight. May we look back on this year as a reminder of how much we can be thankful for that we are able to enjoy the game we all love.
